Why is human life so difficult? Why do we struggle so often with anxiety, worry, fear, and irritation? If we look inside we can find the immediate causes of specific problems, but we can easily miss the deeper root of all of our inner pain and dis-ease: a subtle ignorance that instinctively believes in a distorted version of reality.
Buddha’s teachings on emptiness, or “ultimate truth,” help us to discover this subtle ignorance within our minds and gradually loosen our grasping at this distorted reality. Because this is a subtle topic, the teachings are sometimes difficult to understand – and so we can get the impression that they are too complicated or intellectual. But when we get to the heart of things, the subject of emptiness is both practical and deeply healing. Through contemplating and meditating on ultimate truth our grasping gradually loosens, our mind becomes lighter, and eventually our suffering completely ceases.
