24-hour Tara Prayers: Liberation From Sorrow

Homage to the Swift One, the Heroine.

Who is Buddha Green Tara and the Twenty-one Taras?

Tara is a female Buddha, a manifestation of the ultimate wisdom of all the Buddhas. Each of the Twenty-one Taras is a manifestation of the principal Tara, Green Tara. Tara is also known as the ‘Mother of the Conquerors’. Tara is our common mother, our Holy Mother. When we are young we turn to our worldly mother for help. She protects us from immediate dangers, provides us with all our temporal needs, and guides and encourages us in our learning and personal development. In the same way, during our spiritual growth we need to turn to our Holy Mother, Tara, for refuge. She protects us from all internal and external dangers. Her dearest wish is that all living beings be free from suffering and find inner peace, and so she seeks to help us swiftly overcome our obstacles.

In this retreat, we dedicate a 24-hour period to making prayers and praises to Buddha Tara for the welfare of the world.

Six sessions of Tara prayers will be held at regular intervals over the 24 hours, with each one lasting for about 75 minutes.

A virtuous pajama party! In between sessions, bring a pillow and blanket and rest on one of the many comfortable sofas at Menlha.

All are welcome to join as many (or as few) sessions as they would like.

Join us for a special Sunday morning class where we celebrate our kind mothers.  Buddha taught that we have benefited from the kindness of countless mothers.

In this class, we will explore, through various lines of logical reasoning, what Buddha means by “all living beings are our kind mothers”, and through contemplating the kindness of these mothers, we will learn how to generate a warm heart and a feeling of closeness towards all living beings.

A wonderful way to spend Mother’s Day, learning to cherish others.

Transforming problems into peace in Kadampa Buddhism involves shifting your perspective from external challenges to internal responses, using compassion and wisdom to transform negativity into positive states like love and acceptance, recognizing that true peace comes from changing the mind, not the situation, and developing mental flexibility to see problems as opportunities for spiritual growth.

Instead of getting irritated or depressed when problems arise, we can use difficult situations to develop inner strength, improve our experience of life and be of benefit to others.

Loss is universal, a true suffering. We call this type of suffering grief. But if we look deeply we find that the suffering comes not from loss itself but the negative mind of desirous attachment.

While attachment causes us pain, love — including our love for the departed — brings only peace. We’ll explore in this class the nature of attachment and ways of diminishing it, alongside the healing potential of love.
