A “Kadampa” is “someone who takes all of Buddha’s teachings as personal advice and puts them into practice in their daily lives.” How they do this is by practicing Lamrim in a straightforward and integrated daily practice, both in meditation and by transforming their everyday activities into their spiritual path.

The essential practice of Kadampa Buddhism is a daily practice of Heart Jewel Prayers with Lamrim meditation.  This is the defining characteristic of a Kadampa Buddhist.

Heart Jewel is a chanted meditation that is a method for receiving attainments through the practice of the Guru Yoga of Je Tsongkhapa.  It also contains prayers to our Dharma Protector, the wisdom Buddha Dorje Shugden, who protects our tradition and removes obstacles from our own spiritual practice.  In this Saturday workshop, we will learn how to use these chanted prayers as a guided meditation that connects us with our Spiritual Guide and deepens our understanding of the Lamrim (stages of the path) meditations.

This course will be utterly illuminating and practical for anyone who has been coming to the Center for a little while and developed an interest in creating a regular, authentic Buddhist practice with guaranteed good results. It will also set the stage for our new Monday night class (starting January 26) where each week you will be guided in a different Lamrim meditation.

Suitable for beginners through to total experts, everyone will learn something useful and inspiring on this special day.

Schedule

10 – 11:30 am • Introduction to Heart Jewel & Lamrim
11:30 – 12 pm  • Break
12  – 1 pm • Heart Jewel with guided Lamrim practice

Transforming problems into peace in Kadampa Buddhism involves shifting your perspective from external challenges to internal responses, using compassion and wisdom to transform negativity into positive states like love and acceptance, recognizing that true peace comes from changing the mind, not the situation, and developing mental flexibility to see problems as opportunities for spiritual growth.

Instead of getting irritated or depressed when problems arise, we can use difficult situations to develop inner strength, improve our experience of life and be of benefit to others.

You’ll learn how to cultivate mental stillness through specially designed talks and guided meditations. Guaranteed to leave you feeling refreshed, centered, and equipped to bring peace and contentment back into your everyday life.

What is Retreat?

"On retreat we stop all forms of business and extraneous activities so as to emphasize a particular spiritual practice. There are three kinds of retreat: physical, verbal and mental. We engage in physical retreat when, with a spiritual motivation, we isolate ourself from other people, activities and noise, and disengage from extraneous and meaningless actions. We engage in verbal retreat when, with a spiritual motivation, we refrain from meaningless talk and periodically keep silence. We engage in mental retreat by preventing distractions and strong delusions such as attachment, anger, jealousy and strong self-grasping from arising, and by maintaining mindfulness and conscientiousness... From the book 'Heart Jewel' by Ven. Geshe Kelsang Gyatso

Schedule

10 – 11 am • Session 1 with guided meditation

11 – 11:15 am • Break with light snacks. Silence will be observed.
